Founders Norman deLeuze and Gino Zepponi were actually aeronautical engineers at Aerojet General in Sacramento, where they spent their days designing and building some of the nation's very first rocket engines. "ZD" was a strict quality control acronym posted all over their rocket plant, standing for "Zero Defects". When the duo decided to try their hand at winemaking on a shoestring budget in 1969, they applied that same rigorous, obsessive rocket-science philosophy to their barrels—shaving and rebuilding used brandy casks by hand because they couldn't afford new oak. When you drink this bottle, you are tasting a legacy literally built on the meticulous, zero-error mathematics of rocket propulsion.
