Opus One 2015
About Opus One
Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley. Opus One, like any great work, arose out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromised quality, Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.
A Vintage to Remember
Opus One 2015 is a particularly rich and expressive chapter in the history of one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wines. The vintage was defined by exceptionally low yields across Napa, the result of an unusually early growing season and challenging weather during flowering. What the vineyards sacrificed in quantity, however, they often gained in concentration, and the 2015 Opus One captures that character with remarkable depth while maintaining the polish and restraint that have long separated the estate from more overtly powerful Napa Cabernet blends.
The wine is composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. In the glass, it is broad and sumptuous, unfolding with layers of cassis, black cherry and ripe plum alongside violets, rose petals, graphite, cocoa, espresso, cigar box and subtle exotic spice. Despite the concentration of the vintage, there is impressive freshness beneath the fruit, with finely textured tannins and enough acidity to give the wine definition and length rather than sheer weight.
What makes the 2015 especially compelling today is that it is beginning to move beyond its youthful phase. The exuberant fruit and oak that marked its early years are starting to integrate, allowing the wine’s floral, savory and mineral dimensions to emerge more clearly. Antonio Galloni described the vintage as unusually opulent for Opus One and ultimately rated it 97 points, with a drinking window extending to 2045. Wine Advocate awarded it 97+ points, while James Suckling rated it 98 points.
Born from a tiny, concentrated Napa harvest and now entering a fascinating stage of maturity, the 2015 Opus One combines the generosity of a warm California vintage with the Bordeaux-inspired architecture that has defined the estate since its founding. It is a serious cellar wine, but increasingly seductive today with a thoughtful decant—a beautifully evolved example of Opus One with decades of life still ahead.
