Tempos Vega Sicilia Unico 2015
About This Wine
The 2015 Tempos Vega Sicilia Único arrives as a landmark vintage, representing the first harvest vinified entirely under the direction of technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga. Born from a warm, rapid growing season that required meticulous timing to capture the grapes "al dente," this blend of 96% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon breaks from the strictly chiseled linearity of its 2014 predecessor, leaning instead into a more voluptuous and expressive profile. True to the estate's rigorous tradition, the wine underwent a decadelong slumber prior to its release, split evenly between five years in a combination of new and used oak barrels and vats, followed by another five years aging peacefully in the bottle.
On the nose, the 2015 vintage is remarkably open and aromatic from the start, weaving a complex aromatic tapestry that bridges primary fruit with early tertiary sophistication. Bright aromas of maraschino cherry, juicy plum, and wild blackberry are seamlessly layered against an exotic backdrop of cumin, balsam, and wild herbs like rosemary and thyme. As it breathes, classic signatures of cigar box, dried tobacco leaf, and fine cocoa powder emerge, anchored by an intriguing undercurrent of crushed limestone minerality and a fleeting, savory hint of tapenade.
The palate strikes a brilliant, rare equilibrium between full-bodied power and effortless weightlessness. It coats the mouth with abundant, fine-grained, chalky tannins that provide a monumental architecture without feeling overly aggressive or heavy. A vibrant pulse of natural acidity cuts cleanly through the concentrated core of dark fruit, imparting a lively, crunchy freshness that beautifully balances the wine's 14.5% alcohol. The finish is vertical, focused, and exceptionally persistent, leaving a lingering trail of salty licorice, milled pepper, and refined oak spice. While its integration makes it surprisingly accessible after a generous decant, this Único possesses the raw material, structural integrity, and impeccable balance to evolve gracefully in the cellar for the next several decades.
