About This Wine
In 1984, Rita and Virgilio purchased Tua Rita, intending to use the land and buildings as a peaceful haven to work on and enjoy together. However, their love for wine ultimately transformed everything. The wine itself, a pure Merlot, takes its name from a nearby stream. When Rita and Virgilio set aside two barrels in 1994 from the first production, they could never have predicted that it would become an internationally renowned wine. This exceptional wine was born from vines planted in 1988 on a gentle slope in the heart of the estate, benefiting from the perfect combination of location, soil, and microclimate.
The 2022 Tua Rita Redigaffi presents itself as a powerful, yet surprisingly elegant, expression of Merlot from the Tuscan coast. In the glass, it promises a deep, inky color, hinting at its concentration and youthful intensity.
On the nose, it's a symphony of dark, ripe fruit. Expect to find notes of black cherry, cassis, and blackberry compote, interwoven with more complex aromas. There's often a touch of savory earth, a whisper of cedar, and a subtle, almost dusty cocoa powder that speaks to its refined character. As it opens, a hint of violet or lavender may emerge, a hallmark of well-made Merlot.
The palate confirms the promise of the bouquet. It's full-bodied and rich, with a plush, velvety texture that coats the mouth. The fruit flavors are expansive, but held in check by a firm backbone of acidity and a structure of finely integrated, polished tannins. There's a mineral streak that runs through the wine, a testament to the Maremma's unique terroir, giving it a sense of place and preventing it from becoming overly jammy. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lingering impression of both fruit and a delicate, savory spice.
This is a wine that, while approachable in its youth, is clearly built for the long haul. It possesses the kind of balance and depth that will allow it to evolve beautifully over time, revealing further layers of complexity and nuance. It's a testament to the vintage's power and the winemaking philosophy of Tua Rita, creating a Redigaffi that is both a modern classic and an homage to its Tuscan roots.
