Château Calon Ségur 2019
About This Wine
Every bottle of Château Calon Ségur features a distinctive heart on its label—a symbol of passion that has become synonymous with this legendary Bordeaux estate.
The heart pays homage to Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Ségur. Known as the "Prince of Vines" in the Court of Versailles, the Marquis owned premier Left Bank properties like Château Lafite, Château Latour, and Château Mouton Rothschild. Yet, his true devotion belonged to just one estate. As he famously declared: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon."
What truly distinguishes Château Calon Ségur from other Left Bank Bordeaux estates is its rare 55-hectare walled vineyard, managed carefully by a dedicated team of fifty. The terroir features a rich blend of gravel and colorful clays that act as a natural sponge, preserving crucial moisture and imparting a signature freshness to the grapes.
Under the direction of Technical Director Vincent Millet, the estate avoids traditional punch-downs and utilizes a modern gravity-flow vat room. This delicate process eliminates heavy, aggressive tannins, ensuring the wines offer remarkable balance, purity, and finesse rather than the rustic heaviness typical of some Saint-Estèphe properties.
Tasting Notes
Full-bodied, velvety, and intensely concentrated, yet strikingly fresh. The attack delivers a wave of dark berry preserves and bitter chocolate, backed by a firm, tightly wound backbone of fine-grained tannins. Technical Director Vincent Millet’s signature gravity-flow winemaking shines through: despite the muscular Saint-Estèphe structure, the mouthfeel feels polished, silky, and surprisingly weightless.
