From The Winemaker
HdV is a venture between the Hyde family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine family of Burgundy. The families, related by marriage, share long histories in French and Californian winemaking. At HdV, we have brought together our knowledge and experience for the purpose of creating single vineyard wines from cool climate sites throughout Napa Valley. Notably, winemaker, Aubert de Villaine, was co-director of Burgundy's most storied house, Domaine de la Romanée Conti.
After three of the most challenging seasons in recent years, with consecutive extreme drought conditions and heat events, 2023 came as a redemption year. The year started with a wet and cold Winter. Spring and early Summer remained cool and overcast, with only a handful of warmer days. Consequently, Harvest was delayed by almost 6 weeks compared to a 10-year average. The waiting was nerve-racking, as early rains and cool Falls are not uncommon in Napa. Moderate weather continued through September and early October, allowing for extended hang time. The crop was balanced and generous, resulting in wines of refined purity and detailed precision.
Vibrant pale-straw color. Chiseled acidity focuses the palate with flavors of lemon ice ranging to dried mango and hazelnut. The texture is an intriguing paradox of precision and charm, reflecting the characters of the 2023 vintage.
