(Updated 12/22/24)
The 2022 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon marks a significant milestone as the winery celebrates its 50th anniversary. This special release has garnered attention and praise from both critics and wine enthusiasts, making it a standout vintage in the Caymus portfolio. This also explains why we have written three blog posts about this wine.
1. Tasting Notes and Profile
Scanning through hundreds of reviews—because "scraping" is not cool—the 2022 vintage of Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is widely described as having a deep, ruby-red color with an enticing bouquet of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and hints of vanilla and spice. On the palate, the wine offers layers of complexity with velvety tannins and flavors of cassis, plum, and chocolate, leading to a long finish. The use of French oak is evident but not overpowering, providing a balanced acidity.
2. Critics' Reviews
Renowned wine critic, Natalie MacLean, awarded the 2022 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon a score of 95/100. Not too shabby for the wine that everyone loves to hate in Facebook wine groups. She highlights the wine's rich tapestry of dark berries and its well-integrated tannins, describing it as having a firm yet velvety structure with a satisfying finish. She suggests pairing it with dishes like duck confit, braised short ribs, or mushroom and truffle risotto. Nom nom.
3. Historical Significance
Caymus Vineyards, founded by the Wagner family in 1972, has set the standard for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2022 vintage not only celebrates the winery's 50-year legacy but also showcases their dedication to innovation and excellence. I discussed this recently in a blog post. This release is crafted from meticulously selected grapes grown in prime Napa Valley vineyards, embodying the essence of the region's terroir. Even if the wine is bottled in Fairfield. I also discussed Caymus' bottling practices in a blog entry. Welcome to the Caymus blog. Ba dum tss.
Final Note
The 2022 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a testament to the Wagner family's enduring legacy in winemaking. This commemorative vintage honors the past while embracing the future, making it a must-try for any wine enthusiast looking to experience the standard for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Natalie scored it a 93, not a 95——-big difference
“Natalie’s Score: 93/100
Caymus 2022 (1500 ml) is a big, bold bouquet of blackberry, cassis and espresso beans on the nose. Rich, full-bodied, complex and intense, the wine opens up on the palate with lush dark cherry, blueberry, dark chocolate, espresso, savoury herbs and finishes smooth and velvety on the palate with a salty mineral kiss. So extravagant and lovely now through 2030, I am not entirely sure a magnum is enough ;) Enjoy it with braised lamb shanks infused with rosemary and thyme and a side of creamy Parmesan polenta.”
