Antinori Tignanello 2022
About This Wine
Tignanello requires no introduction for serious collectors. It is a liquid milestone—celebrating over 50 years since its historic debut as the first Sangiovese aged in barriques and the first modern red to break traditional Chianti rules by blending in Cabernet. The newly released 2022 vintage is a masterclass in terroir over elements. In a warm, dry Tuscan growing season that challenged the region, Tignanello thrived on its steep, limestone-rich estate hillsides. This allocation-grade release delivers the signature energy, elite complexity, and massive investment potential that makes every vintage an instant sell-out.
Sourced exclusively from the historic 77-hectare Tignanello vineyard perched high in the heart of Chianti Classico, this wine reaps the benefit of exceptional day-night temperature swings. Chief enologist Renzo Cotarella masterfully guided the classic blend of 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Cabernet Franc through precise canopy management and hand-sorting. The wine was fermented in truncated conical tanks to optimize aroma preservation and extract cashmere-like tannins, then aged for just over 13 months in predominantly new French and Hungarian oak barrels, followed by another full year of bottle refinement.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 vintage is praised for its extraordinary energy, density, and tension. The wine opens with a brooding and sophisticated bouquet of ripe black cherries, pomegranate seeds, and fresh violets, layered with mineral graphite, balsamic freshness, and a sweet kiss of vanilla. On the palate, it strikes a perfect poise between power and grace. Brisk acids effortlessly cut through a core of rich black fruit, cassis, and savory tobacco, carried across the palate by beautifully integrated, fine-grained tannins. The finish is remarkably long, polished, and mineral-driven.
