Title
About This Wine
Brunello is the prince of Montalcino wines, produced exclusively from 100% Sangiovese grapes picked by hand from vines at least 25 years old. After careful fermentation at controlled temperatures, Tenuta Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured for three years in French oak barrels. After being aged in wood, the wine is bottle aged for a time, an essential process in guaranteeing the pleasing quality and complex attributes that have made this wine world-famous.
Tasting Notes
The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino presents a complex and evolving profile, best enjoyed after some bottle age. In the glass, it displays a ruby red to saturated dark red hue. The nose offers an intense and lingering bouquet, initially showcasing notes of red fruit, spice, and earth. Deeper exploration reveals aromas of pomegranate, lemongrass, ginger, citrus, dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flower, autumnal leaf, dark licorice, wet slate, cola, and grilled rosemary. On the palate, the wine delivers a warm and balanced experience with velvet-smooth tannins and a long finish. It's described as full-bodied and concentrated, with flavors of dark berries, crushed raspberry, earthy florals, dark chocolate, dried wild herbs, spice, flint, smoke, plum, cherry, iron, tobacco, and underbrush. Some tasters find a silky, flowing texture, while others note a plump mouthfeel with a build in tension and vibrant acidity. The tannins are consistently described as well-structured, ranging from velvety and refined to chalky and crunchy, ultimately leading to a long and classically structured finish. Hints of violet, fresh herbs, earthiness, and a saline twist can linger on the finish.
