Pétrus 2007 is a compelling reminder that truly great terroir does not merely benefit from an easy vintage—it reveals itself most clearly when conditions are difficult. The 2007 growing season began with an unusually warm spring before giving way to a cool, damp summer that prolonged the vegetative cycle and demanded relentless work in the vineyard. Salvation arrived in September, when dry, sunny weather allowed Pomerol’s early-ripening Merlot to achieve a level of maturity that proved elusive in many parts of Bordeaux. Much of the Right Bank’s finest Merlot was gathered during the week of September 17, narrowly preceding the heavy rain that arrived on September 22.
