Origin: The history of Fontanafredda is a noble one. It began in 1858 after the unification of Italy, when the country’s first king, Vittorio Emanuele II, purchased this beautiful estate in Piedmont’s Langhe region. Here he started producing wine from native varietals, Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo, which later developed into a commercial business under the direction of the King’s son, Count Mirafiori. Fontanafredda released their first Nebbiolo labeled as Barolo with the 1878 vintage.
Tasting Notes: The color is intense ruby red and tends to garnet with aging. The nose is intense and characteristic, floral and fruity at the same time. The taste is wide, persistent, pleasantly dry and velvety. Aromas of woodland berry, rose, eucalyptus and forest floor are front and center. Elegant yet structured, the focused palate offers juicy cranberry, wild cherry and star anise accompanied by fine-grained tannins. This juicy, informal red offers aromas of wild berry and blue flower. On the fresh easy-drinking palate, soft tannins lithely support crushed black cherry, raspberry and a hint of clove.
